4 Reasons Why Your Internal Communications Strategy Needs Mobile

Bob Michelson | Internal Communications | 2017-07-11

Having an internal communications strategy in place not only helps employees stay productive and motivated, but also plays a part in reducing employee turnover.

As more companies invest in internal communications resources, they need to consider workplace trends and employee habits.

A prevalent workforce trend today relates to mobile phones and their impact on employees: 47% of Tech Pro Research poll respondents stated almost everyone in their workplace uses mobile devices.

While mobile phones can be perceived as a distraction that takes away from employee productivity, mobile can also be leveraged in an internal communications plan to effectively reach employees. Here are a few reasons why your company needs to utilize mobile communication in its internal communications strategy:

1. Employees aren't confined to their desks.

Employees are no longer constricted to their desks all workday. The number of remote employees in an organization is rising, and by 2022, 60% of office-based employees are expected to work remote. With that said, mobile communications can effective reach employees outside of the office with critical messaging to ensure all employees are kept in the loop.

2. Email and intranet communications can get lost in the shuffle.

Employees get a mass amount of emails a day — they're getting more than 2.5 times more emails than what they are sending out. When companies are constantly pushing out communications messages via email, there's a chance those messages will get lost in their inboxes. Pushing essential information to employees via a mobile platform increases the messages' visibility and open rate.

3. Mobile boosts engagement.

Internal communications delivered to mobile devices enables messages to be more specific and tailored to each individual employee. In general, employees who receive relevant and customized messages are significantly more engaged than others who receive general information not pertaining to them individually. Engaged employees are more likely to stay with a company and be more productive. Further, mobile messages also allow two-way communication between the company and employee, allowing employees to not only consume content, but also interact with their colleagues.

4. Mobile supports increased employee productivity.

A mobile device allows employees to receive important information on a timely basis. The mobile device is a perfect platform to send real-time metrics and scorecards to employees. The provision of real-time data is an ideal way to impact employee behavior and productivity. This is in direct contrast to traditional performance data, which is often received too late — or after-the-fact — to stimulate employees to alter their activities.

The workplace is becoming more mobile every day, and employees spend a significant amount of time on their phones — leverage a mobile platform in your internal communications strategy to reach all employees and keep them engaged.
