University of Kentucky is Connecting the Campus Community with Digital Signage

The Challenge of Consistency in Messaging

The University of Kentucky (UK) in Lexington includes 16 colleges and a graduate school, offering 93 undergrad programs and 99 masters programs to 30K students, with a faculty of 2,300. In a connected world, UK expects — and depends on — real time communication to inform, entertain, engage, and motivate students and visitors across 918 acres.

With students inundated with so many methods of message delivery, missing and even ignoring emails and text messages can be a challenge. The University viewed digital signage as a differential option for connecting University messaging to the campus community and visitors. But with almost a dozen digital signage platforms running multiple screens across the 800 acre campus, there was no single way to guarantee consistency, functionality, support, or effective content creation.

The Solution is a Centralized Communication Platform

Consolidating the University’s digital signage with Korbyt Anywhere transformed a technology roadblock into a software solution with a connection to diversified content. Numerous constituencies across campus learned from simple tutorials and webinars on how to take advantage of Korbyt’s standardized approach to digital communication: sophisticated, easy-to-use, with flexible, future-minded focus on content generation and publishing.

Expanding to 150 signage endpoints across campus, Korbyt integrated into UK’s existing systems — event management, emergency alert, RSS, and social feeds — elevating the UK experience with more relevant content to more students and faculty in less time. Digital signage could now capture the attention of students based on their location footprint, delivering communications specific to engineering, biology, law, business and more — in formats that ranged from graphics to video to websites run within a content frame.

Screens in expansive areas were easily reconfigured to direct attention to timely events, as in the case of an iPad distribution program that might have otherwise gone unnoticed by many students. The geospatial team rapidly translated updates to paper maps into electronic wayfinding displays that guided students to renumbered rooms. Recruitment used digital signs in highly trafficked areas to notify prospective students about scholarships and necessary paperwork.

And throughout COVID, Korbyt’s single source of truth made a major difference in the literal well-being of UK by bringing screens to life with accurate and timely details related to testing, health policy and vaccinations.

A Masters in Communication

Since activating Korbyt Anywhere’s comprehensive solution to school digital signage, University of Kentucky leadership and marketing professionals have recognized the value that was anticipated — that a comprehensive digital signage strategy can deliver more than just consistent content. The right strategy provides the opportunity for coordinated messaging that, when combined with the right software and data integrations — provides a rich experience that empowers all campus users and can effectively streaming key messages.
